Memories of long walks spotting woodland creatures, watching birds being gripped in human hands, whilst being tagged and combining sketches of animals and humans in spare moments sparked the “birdboy” world. Specifically, the creation of the piece “Fallen Angels” (2009), a collage of entangled naked human forms wearing the trade-mark “birdboy” mask engaging in questionable activities in-front of a form of demigod, drew from early recollections of Biblical pre-flood stories when supernatural beings walked the Earth alongside our human race.
Taking inspiration from my love of dark, victorian horror, surreal etchings and dimly lit banquets, I originally intended to paint an image of "A Woodland Date" for the 'Grotesques' show curated by Antlers Gallery. However, they had limited room for 2D work in their show and asked whether I'd be interested in creating some sculptures. Here are some images of the final piece, which is effectively a 3D version of the painting I was going to do. Photography: Pete Cranston
